Egypt, represented by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), participates in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2018 that will be held in the period from 19 to 23 March 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland. The event will be held under the theme, "Leveraging ICTs to Build Information and Knowledge Societies for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" as it is co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP, UNCTAD, UNDESA, as well as other relevant organizations.
The WSIS Forum 2018 has gained great importance as the central hub for all organizations, especially after the General Assembly meeting 2015, which reviewed the outcomes of the Summit and renewed new objectives for the next phase in implementing the Summit's goals with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This forum also represents the largest annual global gathering on "ICT for the community development" and a international multi-stakeholder platform through which the Summit's action lines could be implemented to promote and ensure sustainable development.
The Forum allows the participating countries to review their national projects selected by the organizing committee, which falls within the framework of countries' implementation of the Summit's objectives. This provides a great opportunity for Egypt to determine the best practices and appropriate mechanisms for their implementation at the national level, as it coordinates efforts with the representatives of these organizations to develop new partnerships. Furthermore, the Forum is a great chance for NTRA to invest these partnerships in implementing new national projects and programs in collaboration with UN organizations and seek to obtain partial funding for them. Moreover, global projects could be innovated and launched to benefit Egypt's national projects in which NTRA plays a great role as these organizations are sought to contribute to them and to enhance the scope of the World Summit, marketing it internally and globally. In addition, NTRA will be able to review the activities and projects of these organizations in implementing the Summit's outcomes, and attain the set targets and follow up on the projects of the participating countries, especially the countries of the (Arab and Africa) region in order to extend the scope of these projects to entail regional initiatives that would attract wider participation from international organizations and donors.
