Within the framework of the global acknowledgement of its pioneering role model in the field of telecom regulation in the region, Egypt, represented in the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), has been selected to host the 16th Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) affiliated to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in May 2016. This took place during the participation of Eng. Hesham El Alaily, NTRA’s Executive President, 15th Global Symposium for Regulators will take place in Libreville, Gabon.
It is worth mentioning that NTRA’s hosting and participation in this esteemed event comes in the light of Egypt’s enhancement of its strategic priorities, particularly regarding the development of broadband networks infrastructure which is one of the main components of these priorities. The 16th GSR highlights the most significant measures that should be taken to improve the infrastructure of broadband services on the global level. Furthermore, it discussed the Disabled’s accessibility to these services in addition to other topics including e-learning and the Digital Broadcast Transition and cyber security.
Representatives of the various stakeholders in the telecom sector, decision-makers and the most prominent representatives of the private sector took part in that event. It should be noted that the ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies.
The participants in this year’s event came from various countries around the world. They expressed their delight for selecting Egypt to host the 16th GSR in May 2016 in Sharm El-Sheikh, as this emphasizes Egypt's ability to undertake its effective and unique rank in the esteemed international forums, and maintain its pioneering role among the member states in ITU in the field of technological development and telecommunications.
NTRA exerted strenuous efforts with the Foreign Ministry and the concerned authorities to host this highly significant event, that eventually came as a great success. During his participation in this year’s event, NTRA’s Executive President, Eng. Hesham El Alaily, pointed to the great importance of hosting this event as it brings together the heads of the Telecom Regulatory bodies throughout the world to exchange views and expertise, inspiring an open dialogue among regulatory bodies around the world and the main stakeholders and entities operating in ICT sector.
