International Gateways Liberalization

Within the framework of the liberalization policy of the international telecommunications gateways as per Telecom Law No. 10 for the year 2003, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) is declaring the first phase of international telecommunications services liberalization, with the aim of:
1. Attracting foreign investments in the international telecom sector in Egypt.
2. Promoting competition in the international telecom cables in Egypt, availing for the capacities needed to expand the companies providing voice, internet, and data services in Egypt.
3. Optimizing Egypt’s regional role in the field of international telecom gateways as the center of international traffic.
4. Conveying international experience to Egyptian companies in the field of international cables construction, operation and maintenance.

NTRA has set out the technical, legal and financial regulations necessary for accepting the offers. NTRA will start receiving offers from interested consortia as per the conditions and terms starting from 1 July 2006 for the award of the international cables license using fiber optics with the needed terms of Landing stations and use of Beach Manhole in Suez and Alexandria.
These offers will be examined, and license will be granted to technically, legally, and financially qualified bidders. Priority will be given to consortia with Egyptian partners.
