The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) announces it will initiate technical procedures to ban the activation of any new mobile phones that do not meet the approved international specifications and standards, particularly those set by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), starting from the first of February. This step is part of NTRA’s efforts to ensure the protection of user rights, safeguard their safety, and guarantee high-quality telecommunications services in Egypt’s market. Non-compliant devices have a direct negative impact on the quality of services provided to users, as well as potential adverse effects on citizens’ health.
NTRA calls upon users to verify that any new mobile device they purchase meets the internationally approved technical specifications before completing the purchase. This can be done by checking the device’s unique 15-digit IMEI number through “Telephony” app, which allows customers to determine whether a device complies with the required standards before buying. Additionally, NTRA advises citizens to obtain a tax invoice when purchasing any new device and to report any violations through NTRA’s official challenge. NTRA also warns retailers and distributors against selling mobile phones that do not meet internationally approved specifications, as all necessary legal actions will be taken to protect user rights, in coordination with Consumer Protection Agency (CPA).
It is worth noting that Telecommunication Regulation Law No. 10 of 2003 prohibits the import, manufacture, assembly, marketing, or trade of any telecommunications equipment without obtaining prior permits from NTRA and pursuant to its approved standards and specifications. Devices that do not comply with these standards pose significant risks to users and may also contribute to deteriorating service quality and telecommunications infrastructure.
In this sense, NTRA provided multiple channels for citizens to report any violations related to the marketing and sale of telecommunications devices that do not meet approved specifications and standards. These channels include the call centers of mobile operators, NTRA’s call centers and hotline (155), “My NTRA” interactive App., and the designated website for reporting such issues.
