Egypt launches National IPv6 Strategy
 10 May 2025

Egypt launched today its National IPv6 Strategy during a high-level international conference organized by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) at the InterContinental Citystars Hotel in Cairo. The event was attended by His Excellency Dr. Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, along with Engineer Mohamed Shamroukh, the Executive President of NTRA, as well as a number of representatives from regional and international entities, technology experts, and internet service providers.

This strategy reflects a comprehensive roadmap aimed at enabling Egypt’s digital infrastructure to keep pace with global technological developments, ensure the sustainability of internet services, and accommodate the rapid expansion of 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The strategy also targets achieving a full readiness of both public and private infrastructure to support the IPv6 protocol within the coming three years and seeks to increase national adoption of the protocol to over 60% by 2030. Additionally, it aims to enable internet service providers to offer full support for IPv6 by the end of 2026.

The plan also includes the implementation of specialized training programs and the launch of comprehensive awareness campaigns targeting all stakeholders, including end users, to ensure a smooth and secure rollout of the new protocol nationwide.

This comes at a time when the world is witnessing a notable increase in the adoption of IPv6, with usage rates exceeding 70% in some global markets. The global average reached approximately 45% by the end of 2024, amid a rapid shift to discontinue the use of the previous version, IPv4, due to the exhaustion of available addresses.

During his speech at the conference, Engineer Mohamed Shamroukh emphasized that the launch of this strategy reflects the State’s commitment to achieving sustainable digital transformation. He noted that NTRA has already begun taking practical steps to support this direction by offering incentives to modernize infrastructure, developing programs to build national capabilities, and collaborating with local and international partners to ensure effective and secure implementation.

IPv6 is actually considered the latest generation of internet protocols. It is distinguished by its ability to provide an unlimited number of IP addresses, which facilitates the expansion of device connectivity across networks and enhances the efficiency and security of data transmission. This makes it a fundamental pillar in supporting digital economy and smart city applications.

This conference was held as part of Egypt’s vision to strengthen its regional position as a leading digital hub by adopting the best practices applied worldwide and deepening cooperation with ICT regional and international partners, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Egypt’s Digital Vision 2030.
