In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful,
Mr. Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt,
Mr. Houlin Zhao, ITU Secretary-General,
Ministers and Heads of Delegation,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am honoured to welcome you today at the inauguration of the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019, hosted by Egypt in Sharm El Sheikh, under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and with his gracious attendance. In fact, this international conference, that is held for the first time outside the ITU headquarters in two decades, is considered one of the most prominent global events organized by ITU with the participation of decision makers, telecom experts and other actors in the spectrum management field and concerned with the development of regulatory frameworks of telecom technology industry throughout the world.
This year’s conference raises a number of topics that include many significant issues related to telecom industry, especially those related to radio communications, digital broadcasting systems and satellite communications technology. It will witness as well the review and revision of the Radio Regulations that regulate and govern the optimal use of telecommunications all over the world. The member states participating in the sessions of this event will endorse and approve this international treaty, and discuss a number of topics enlisted on the agenda of the conference related to radio systems.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Egypt has been one of the founding countries of the ITU, originally the International Telegraph Union, since it joined it in 1876, a few years after its establishment. We have been and will always support ITU’s mission and pivotal role in providing and developing telecom services globally and locally.
Egypt has sought to host this most eminent international forum, taking all necessary measures and preparations to ensure its success in light of the government’s keenness to boost telecom technology industry due to the leading role played by the ITU’s radio sector through the optimal usage and economic exploitation of this rare valuable resource that is essential for all radiocommunication services. Hence, Egypt is keen to participate effectively in the works of the ITU Radio Sector, as it has been elected a member of the ITU Council and in the Radio Regulations Board during the Plenipotentiary Conference of 2018.
This year’s conference shall set the controls and regulate the foundations for some key technologies that will have positive impacts on the international telecommunication community, including the controls of the transition to 5G that has been briskly expanding.
