NTRA issues first follow-up report on Facebook service breakdown
 5 October 2021

The work team formed yesterday by the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) to follow up the abrupt breakdown in Facebook services worldwide, issued primary indicators to assess the impact of such a breakdown on internet services across Egypt. These indicators are actually as follow:

  • Main Facebook apps (Facebook, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram) were down for 6 and a half hours, from 6.30 P.M. to 12.30 A.M.), after which they had gradually started to function.
  • It was noticed during the service-breakdown that other alike instant messaging apps had witnessed an increasing traffic by fivefold to eightfold. Similarly, other alike VOIP apps witnessed an increase by threefold to fourfold. This was actually due to the usage of such apps by subscribers, to replace Facebook’s down apps.

It’s also worth noting that periodic follow-up operations for all latest news are still conducted by NTRA’s work team, until the final report of Facebook regarding such a problem is issued.
