As part of its ongoing efforts to protect the privacy of telecommunications service users and reduce spam calls, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) announced a new set of regulatory and technical measures aimed at enhancing transparency and enabling citizens to better identify callers, whether via mobile or landline phones.
These updates included the launch of a caller ID service for landline phones, which allows users to see the name of the calling entity when receiving landline calls, including telemarketing calls, helping them decide whether to answer or not. The caller identity service was also enhanced to display the caller’s role or occupation, especially in cases of incoming calls from journalists, delivery personnel, or charity workers, with the aim of distinguishing these segments from unwanted marketing calls.
NTRA also confirmed the implementation of strict measures against violators, as any phone device used repeatedly to make spam calls will be permanently deactivated across all networks. Furthermore, subscribers found using their lines for unauthorized marketing calls, will be banned from obtaining any new lines in the future, in order to ensure compliance with the regulations protecting citizens’ privacy.
This step adds to the regulations previously issued by NTRA in July 2024 regarding regulating the use of mobile lines for promotional and marketing calls. These regulations stipulated that individuals wishing to make such calls, should register their information with mobile service providers and activate the service legally. They also granted citizens the ability to recognize the nature of the call through the appearance of the caller’s name or a prior notification labeled “NTRA Alert.”
In this sense, NTRA affirms its continued commitment to taking all necessary measures in coordination with telecom operators. It also provided multiple channels for citizens to report spam calls, through the operators’ call centers, NTRA’s call center (155), the official “My NTRA” mobile app, or via the dedicated website: https://fraud.tra.gov.eg.
