The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) has released its annual Regulatory Index for Mobile Money for 2024. Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) advanced 39 places, ranking 6th out of 90 countries that rely on this type of service worldwide, compared to 45th place in 2023. The index score increased to 93 points in 2024, up from 80 points in 2023, achieving the highest growth rate globally.
Egypt’s progress in this index reflects the success of national efforts to transition toward a fully integrated digital society and strengthen financial inclusion as one of the key pillars for building a competitive digital economy. The number of mobile wallets in the Egyptian market reached more than 50 million by the end of 2024—an increase of over 25% compared to 40 million mobile wallets at the end of 2023.
This advancement comes as a result of the efforts of the NTRA, in cooperation with the Central Bank of Egypt, as well as companies and banks providing mobile wallet services, to enable all segments of society to benefit from mobile wallets, accommodate their diverse needs, and facilitate access to all services.
