As part of Egypt’s national strategy for digital transformation, and in line with its commitment to upholding the country’s leadership in the field of ICT at both regional and African levels, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA), in cooperation with Telecom Egypt and Huawei, announced the successful completion of the first trial in Africa to operate mobile services using the 6 GHz band (U6GHz). This milestone makes Egypt the first nation in Africa to test this advanced frequency band for mobile communications.
The trial included operating the first mobile base station using the 6 GHz band and conducting the first data call over this spectrum. The band is among the latest globally-recognized frequency ranges nominated to support high capacity mobile services, keeping pace with international developments in 5G and next generation technologies.
Moreover, the trial achieved data transfer speeds of approximately 1.7 Gbps per user, underscoring the band’s potential to deliver ultra fast speeds, expand network capacity, and enhance service quality—particularly in areas with high traffic density.
This initiative reflects NTRA’s ongoing efforts to study and test cutting edge global technologies, while ensuring the optimal use of spectrum resources as a vital national asset. It also strengthens Egypt’s readiness to adopt future technologies and reinforces its pioneering role in spectrum management across Africa.
The use of the 6 GHz band also represents a qualitative leap toward faster, more efficient, and more reliable communications for individuals, businesses, and government entities. It supports data intensive future applications such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality, and cloud computing, and thereby contributing to Egypt’s digital transformation journey, boosting the competitiveness of the national economy, and consolidating the country’s position as a regional hub for digital infrastructure and telecommunications, in line with Egypt Vision 2030.
Eng./ Mohamed Shamroukh, NTRA’s Executive President, declared that that the 6 GHz band (U6GHz) is one of the strategic frequency ranges included in Egypt’s long term national spectrum plan (2030–2035), currently under preparation. He further emphasized that the success of this trial marks an important step toward assessing the band’s capabilities to support high capacity mobile services, ensuring optimal use of spectrum as a strategic national resource. He added that such success helps with advancing Egypt’s goals in developing ICT infrastructure, enhancing the digital economy, and achieving the objectives of 2030 vision.
